problem with a light source in front of PML (or inside model) in RF module using assembly

is there anyone having experience in modeling a light source inside model using assembly?

you can find more specific model scratch in attach. I think in this case we could not use scattered harmonic propagation mode since the structure (the yellow stuff, you can call it as 'grating') is not in homogeneous material. it is surrounded by semi-infinite material 1 and semi-infinite materail2. (as far as I know, the scattered harmonic propagation mode under RF module can only be used for structures in a homogeneous material surrounding)

I have been trying to build a 3D model using assembly with source inside. not suceed. but it works for 2D, I really have no idea what happened to 3D case.

is there any other special setting beside activate "using assembly" and "create pairs" under draw?

or is there any thickness requirement for each layer compared with working wavelength (visible light wavelength range)? I used very thin ~ 200nm for each layer because it is a 3D model and it requires lots of memory.

BTW: comsol version 3.5a. I can't not make this work on version4.1 even in 2D case. if someone have successful experience in V 4.1, i really appreciate if you can share it
