(Online) AC/DC in COMSOL Multiphysics® Course (3 Days)

December 10–12, 2024 9:30 a.m. GMT

Back to Events Calendar

This is a comprehensive three-day training course aimed at individuals seeking to enhance their skills in using COMSOL’s AC/DC Module.

If you are a current or potential user of COMSOL Multiphysics® who wants to learn how to use the software for AC/DC modeling, this is the course for you. The AC/DC Modeling course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the AC/DC Module, an add-on to COMSOL Multiphysics® that is appropriate for modeling static, transient, and sinusoidally time-varying electromagnetic fields. During this 3-day course, you will learn how the AC/DC Module can be used for modeling resistive, capacitive, and inductive devices, as well as magnets, forces, and motion.

By the end of the training course, you will know how to build models for electrostatic, magnetostatic, and low-frequency AC applications. You will also be able to extract lumped electrical parameters from the model and augment these full-fidelity models by connecting them to a simple electrical circuit network model. This course allows current and potential users of COMSOL Multiphysics® and the AC/DC Module to quickly get acquainted with the software's modeling capabilities.

To teach this course, we use a combination of theoretical and practical lecture, demonstrations and self-guided hands-on training.

Day 1

Session 1: 10:00 – 13:00

In the first session, we will introduce you to the AC/DC Module. We will discuss different electromagnetic devices and the physics interfaces best suited for modeling them. We will then discuss stationary and low frequency electric field and electric current computation in the context of capacitor and resistor modeling.

Topics Include:

  • Overview of the AC/DC Module
  • The Electrostics interface
  • Capacitor modeling
  • The Electric Currents interface

Hands-on Exercises: 14:00 - 16:00

Review Day 1: 16:00 – 16:30

Day 2

Session 1: 10:00 – 13:00

Building onto the previous day, we will discuss meshing considerations from the perspective of electromagnetic phenomena. We will then consider full electromagnetic field modeling in the presence of coils, inductors and permanent magnets.

Topics Include:

  • Meshing considerations for AC/DC models
  • The Magnetic Fields interface
  • Coil modeling
  • The Magnetic Fields, No Currents interface

Hands-on Exercises: 14:00 - 16:00

Review Day 2: 16:00 – 16:30

Day 3

Session 1: 10:00 – 13:00

On the final day of the course, you will learn about how to account for motion in electromagnetic simulations, and well as perform accurate force and torque calculation.

Topics Include:

  • The Rotating Machinery, Magnetic interface
  • Moving mesh
  • Electromagnetic force and torque calculation methods

Hands-on Exercises: 14:00 - 16:00

Review Day 3: 16:00 – 16:30

Suggested Background

Basic understanding of low frequency electromagnetic physics and familiarity with COMSOL Multiphysics® interface is recommended. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the COMSOL Multiphysics® Intensive Training course prior to attending this course.
