Structural Integrity of a Hip Replacement

The most common reason that people have hip-replacement surgery is due to the wearing down of the hip joint that results from osteoarthritis. Other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis (a chronic inflammatory disease that causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling), avascular necrosis (loss of bone caused by insufficient blood supply), injury, and bone tumors can also lead to the breakdown of the hip joint and the need for a hip replacement.

This model investigates the structural integrity of a hip replacement. It was inspired by the original work of Professor Hart, who used it as a tutorial example for his freshman introductory course in Biomedical Engineering.
