Outside normal component of Electric field on a surface

I am solving electrostatics(es) of sphere in external material. After solving, I need to know normal component of Electric field on the sphere surface. I know I can calculate the normal component of Electric field with nx*es.Ex+ny*es.Ey+nz*es.Ez. But Is this outside normal component or inside normal component? (for sphere material or extermal material?). The normal component of Electric field on the surface of sphere side is different from that external material side. How can I specify the outside or inside normal component of Electric field on a surface ?
